Course content:
With increasing age, existing general diseases and concomitant medication are becoming increasingly important in patient care. A large number of general diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis, show oral symptoms and/or can increase the risk of oral diseases and negatively influence their course, e.g. periodontitis. In addition, various medications have a direct influence on the course of the disease, such as promoting drug-induced gingival overgrowth or dry mouth. In addition, general diseases or health conditions as well as the underlying medication can cause potential complications during and after treatment that require treatment-oriented risk management, such as the need for antibiotic prophylaxis. The heterogeneity of individual patient cases requires a complex assessment of these factors with regard to a potential risk of complications and/or disease, based on a detailed and recurrent medical history. A profound understanding of general medical aspects and their significance for treatment and lifelong prevention is therefore essential for successful clinical care.
