What is new about this therapy?
The incidence of peri-implant pathology is increasing. The therapy is difficult and the long-term results are rather disappointing. Bacterial biofilms are causally involved in peri-implantitis. Conversely, successful treatment requires the removal of the bacteria. Inadequate decontamination of the surfaces due to difficult access to the defects, macro and micro design of the surfaces may be reasons for the high complication rate during treatment. So far, neither the complete removal of the biofilmnor an adequate amount of reosseointegration has been achieved. Several in vitro studies have shown that a new electrolytic method (GalvoSurge) completely removes the biofilm from contaminated implants. The resulting superhydrophilic surface has advantages for reosseointegration . An animal and a clinical study showed for the first time that complete reosseointegration can be achieved. The method works regardless of the manufacturer of the implants or the titanium alloy used.
